THE SHOOTING OF THE FILM BEING ALREADY FINISHED, THE INVESTMENT WILL GO TO THE FINAL STAGE OF THE EDITING AND SOUND AND IMAGE EDITING OF THE FILM.
THE FILM HAS TWO PARTS OF APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS EACH.
THE EDITING OF THE FIRST PART IS AT AN ADVANCED DRAFT STAGE, WITH AN ESTIMATED 200 HOURS OF PICTURE AND SOUND EDITING WORK TO BE COMPLETED.
THE SECOND PART IS IN A LESS ELABORATE STATE OF EDITING, WITH APPROXIMATELY 600 HOURS OF WORK TO BE DONE.
IN TOTAL, APPROXIMATELY 20 WEEKS OF WORK, THAT IS TO SAY BETWEEN 4 AND 5 MONTHS, WHICH MEANS THAT THE FILM IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETELY READY FOR ITS PREMIERE BEFORE DECEMBER 2021.
PEPA AND THE CHAMELEONS IS A VERY UNIQUE WORK IN WHICH THE SAME PROTAGONISTS ARE CONTINUOUSLY MIXED, PLAYING CHARACTERS THAT ARE TWO CENTURIES APART. WITH A PHILOSOPHICAL, HUMANIST AND REVOLUTIONARY SENSE.
FOR THESE REASONS THE EDITING IS EXTREMELY COMPLEX, BECAUSE ON THE OTHER HAND WE TRY TO MAKE A FILM THAT IS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL VIEWERS, WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS OF DEPTH IN WHICH EACH PERSON CAN FIND HIS OR HER OWN DIFFERENT BUT ALWAYS INTERESTING AND AMUSING READING OF THE FILM.

Information and pre-registration fees have been sent to around 200 film festivals in 27 countries, which are the events that seem likely to be interested in a work with the characteristics of PEPA AND THE CHAMELEONS.

A FEATURE FILM SHOT IN CÁDIZ
From 2012 to 2017 we have been shooting a handcrafted feature film entitled Pepa and the Chameleons, with 27 chameleon-like actors, all of them non-professional and from the province of Cadiz.
The source of inspiration for the film was the resistance of the Isla de León (currently the city of San Fernando) and Cádiz against the siege of Napoleon's troops, which lasted nearly three years, and during which the Spanish Courts, sheltered there, drew up the first Spanish constitution of 1812, popularly known as "La Pepa".
Almost two hundred and ten years later, the script is based on the character of an unemployed veteran fisherman from the marshes, the gypsy Manolín, who in his marvellous madness takes on the historical figure of the heroic and very humble sergeant Antonio García. In his unbelievable nonsense he drags along family, friends and neighbours of the Bay of Cadiz.
It is a film of extremely complex editing, because among other themes it deals with the philosophical-scientific conflict of simultaneity, in everyday chronological time, and in the time of history.
CURRENT NEEDS
The film consists of two parts, each lasting approximately 2 hours. After three years of work on the editing (2018-23), the project is in its final phase. Having exhausted all our resources, funds are urgently required for the editing and post-production of image and sound, as well as for the dissemination, promotion of the premiere and distribution of the film. In festivals, cinemas and film clubs in different Spanish and foreign cities, as well as on the Internet.
The final work, given its plot, its artistic-technical characteristics, its socio-political contents, its sense of humour, and its singularity of production (financially autarkic), must be considered as a competently different film, perhaps unique, in the recent history of Spanish cinema.
Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign
AN AUTEUR FILM AND NON-PROFESSIONAL ACTORS
The film has differential contents with respect to the works normally produced in the Spanish film industry.
Shot in HD, with excellent artistic design, period costumes, and with sufficient technical equipment, the final film (in two parts) Pepa and the Chameleons must be considered an extra-ordinary work. Both for the libertarian mode of production and for the casting, as it is a choral film with 27 actors with no preliminary experience whatsoever, in an age range from 3 to 85 years old. The film's script also has an unusual structure, due to the experimentation of mixing historical times simultaneously in the same plot.
A PROJECT WITH FOUNDATIONS, LOCAL INSPIRATION AND A UNIVERSAL DIMENSION
The script includes revolutionary ideas by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, philosophical ideas by Miguel de Unamuno, mystic-libertarian ideas by the poet Jesús Lizano, and some paradoxes about the relativistic concept of simultaneity, established from the theories of Albert Einstein.
All this with a sense of humour, and taking the emblematic figure of the chameleon, that friendly little animal, so loved and respected in Cádiz, as a witness to the passing of history, in the marvellous landscapes of the marshes and the coast of Cádiz.
In short, this is a work with a clear revolutionary sense at all levels, and anti-imperialist, as was the struggle of Cadiz, besieged for years by Napoleon's troops. Atlantic and beautiful, oceanic and almost insular, the also called "Tacita de plata" was the city where the first Spanish constitution was born on March 19th 1812 (Saint Joseph's day and on the feast of the “Pepes”and “Pepas”): also very popularly known as "La Pepa", with the traditional sense of humour omnipresent in Cadiz.
The film has already been shot in two parts, of two hours each, and only a financial endowment is missing to finalise the editing and post-production.
Why this is important
FOR LOVERS OF FREE CULTURE AND CINEMA
the project is aimed at all people committed to culture and art in general, and to auteur cinema in particular. We are talking about free, sustainable, poetic, committed filmmaking that is not subject to commercial pressures or to the "star-system" of the audiovisual industry.
Pepa and the chameleons should appeal to all those friends and colleagues, known and unknown, who sympathise with carrying out artistic enterprises that are as difficult as they are free, culturally ecological. Almost impossible projects, as this work was before we shot it.
OUR FILMIC-ARTISTIC-SOCIO-CULTURAL COMMITMENT
As I said in our case, the film has already been shot, and all that is missing is a little help (proportionally to the total cost of the work) for the final stages of editing, post-production, diffusion, promotion and distribution of the film.
We are committed to an art cinema that is accessible to all audiences, given the comedic tone of the script. A "cinema-ecologism" in the sense of promoting, in theory and in practice, the primordial artisanal and experimental dimension of the seventh art. In favour of a humanist environment and cultural ecosystem, and resisting the audiovisual siege of our inflationary 21st century.
Would we speak of independent cinema, or would it be better to speak of dependent cinema, dependent on so much help, on so many people who have participated, on so many sandwiches made at night for the "cattering" of the next day's filming, on so many foreseeable and unpredictable circumstances, environmental and psychological, on so many colours and lights, in the sky and the waters of the marshes and the ocean of Cadiz!

ARTISTIC AND SCIENTIFIC ITINERARY AND RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DIRECTOR
The director and producer of the film is the veteran "cinehasta" Manuel Polls Pelaz, author of 23 short films and 6 feature films. Manuel has spent nearly 30 years defending in Paris, Geneva, Barcelona, Madrid, Granada and Jerez, the history, and the existence in practice, of the "other Spanish international cinema".
Manuel has founded and directed various film festivals committed to art cinema, from the times of the "Festival l'Alternativa" in Barcelona (1994), to the current "IX Festival Cinemística" in Granada (2023).
In love with Cádiz, its people, its history, its humour and anthropological rites, its marshes, its ruins and the ocean, Manuel has been spending as much time as possible there for years, in different seasons and places of the province. He has become familiar with the changing colours of the landscape and the friendly and "chameleon-like" atmosphere of the people in the province, including the famous carnival of Cádiz.
Manuel Polls Pelaz has been living and working in Granada for 19 years, where he has been the founder of the Guadalcine Association, and director of Labcinearq at the University's School of Architecture (2017-19).
In his personal and professional itinerary, he has a transdisciplinary sense, which has been evident since his militant environmentalist youth, and research work in naturalistic biology (see https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_Polls_Pelaz).

FLESH AND BLOOD" ACTORS, AND SOMETHING MORE
Pepa and the Chameleons is a feature film made entirely with non-professional actors from Cádiz, a faithful reflection of the same revolutionary spirit with which the first Spanish constitution of 1812 "La Pepa" was forged 209 years ago. Among them housewives, students and retired people, together with other actors from other disciplines such as Law, Art History, Audiovisual and Fine Arts, Anthropology, Medicine, Psychology, Social Education, Literature, Translation, Tourism and Commerce, Music and Architecture. They were joined by people of free trade, typical of the daily idiosyncrasy and the good knowledge of Cádiz.
COMMEMORATING OUR HISTORY
In 1812 the then constituent city of Cadiz (the last free metropolis in peninsular Spain in the face of Napoleon) was besieged for years by the French imperialist troops. Courageously resisting the siege, with British naval assistance and, of course, with the indispensable great sense of humour of Cadiz in the face of adversity.
A MODERN-DAY STORY WITH REMINISCENCES OF THE 19TH CENTURY. The script is based on the contemporary character of a veteran unemployed fisherman, Manolín, who in his marvellous madness takes himself for the historical figure of the very humble sergeant Antonio García.
Indeed, Sergeant García was a valiant Spanish hero of the War of Independence, wounded in a thousand battles, who even survived being shot by Napoleon's troops, and who was decorated in Cádiz, simultaneously with the Duke of Wellington, with the highest Spanish medal: the Cross of San Fernando...
LOCATIONS TAKEN TO THE CINEMA. The film is set entirely in landscapes of the province such as Cádiz capital, the marshes of San Fernando, El Portal, Jerez de la Frontera, Puerto Real, El Puerto de Santa María, the Almocadén winery, the caves of San Cristóbal, the countryside of Trebujena, and Chipiona. For the indoor shoots we have used the houses of family members, but also of strangers who became friends, and friends of friends, as is the case of Cortijo La Salud and the Buen Pastor neighbourhood in San Fernando.
We thank again for their generosity and commitment to promote cultural projects of a few, all the people who helped and continue to help make this project possible.
RESPECT FOR NATURE IN GENERAL, AND CHAMELEONS IN PARTICULAR. By the way, as the endemic species of chameleon is protected in Cádiz (and its capture in the wild is forbidden), in the film we have worked with chameleons of another species from Yemen, very similar to the ones from Cádiz. The chameleons were perfectly documented, acquired in approved shops, and treated with maximum attention, respect and veterinary care throughout the filming.
Likewise, in all the locations where we were filming we tried to leave the place even cleaner than we had found it, without disturbing the biology or the biorhythms of the native species at any time.
